SOLAR ROTATIONS |
The period of solar rotation (sidereal period) is 25,380 days. As the Earth moves around the Sun, the period we observe from our planet (synodic period) is about two days longer (27,275 days). Because of the differential rotation, these intervals are averages calculated at a latitude of 16º. A solar rotation begins when the origin meridian coincides with the center of the disk and has a duration equal to that of the synodic period. The rotations are numbered consecutively according to the series initiated by Carrington, who assigned the No. 1 to the one that began on November 9, 1853.
